Program Notes

Rumble on 6th Street was commissioned by and dedicated to the Grisham Middle School Honors Band and Betty Bierschenk-Pierce, Conductor, for their 2013 Midwest performance. “1 am so proud of my students as well as my private lesson staff. I can’t imagine life without either and I would love a piece that would honor both ... and I want it to be fun!” Drawing inspiration from the many concert venues and night clubs on Austin’s very own 6th Street, composer Brian Beck captures the essence of funk music with a potpourri of style markings, aggressive dynamics, static harmonies, rhythmic/metric variations, and, don’t forget, screaming solos. Just like on 6th Street, anything goes!
