Program Notes

This tuneful, commissioned, British-style march emulates the passing-by of a regiment as it marches in a parade. A regal introduction for optional flute solo, lower voices, and percussion is intended to convey the sounds of bagpipes, fifes, and drums. A full-ensemble section follows, with the fife melody stated by trumpets.

- Program Note from The Instrumentalist

The piece was commissioned by the Mulrennan Middle School Wind Symphony, conducted by Michael Vail, and is dedicated to Mr. Vail's son Andrew. The Royal Irish Regiment is a regiment of the British army, and Mulrennan is a surname of Irish descent. Mr. Vail specifically requested a British-style march when commissioning this piece, so I thought it was only fitting to name the piece after an Irish military regiment that is part of the British army.
