Program Notes
John Philip Sousa once wrote to Mayhew Lake with the greeting “To my dear friend, Mayhew Lake — our finest orchestrator for military band — with all good wishes." Throughout Lake’s career, he and Sousa were great friends, and Sousa would often perform Lake’s compositions and arrangements with his own band.
The Roosters Lay Eggs in Kansas is a ‘tongue-in-cheek’ ditty that Sousa often used as an encore. With its delightful and catchy melody, no one can deny the charm of “Sousa’s Favorite Encore."
This fantastic edition was prepared by Robert E. Foster, accomplished trumpeter and beloved American bandmaster, composer, conductor, (and sometime Sousa impersonator), who served as Director of Bands at the University of Kansas from 1971 to 2002.
