Program Notes

When Derek Bourgeois was a school boy, he played the tuba and as a budding composer he decided he needed a grand vehicle to display his mastery of the instrument. He therefore set out to write the work and completed the opening tune. At that time, however, he did not have the expertise to develop the material and after the tune the concerto came to an abrupt halt.

Many years later, Derek Bourgeois was invited to write a work for tuba and concert band and Rondo Grotsesco is the result - the school boy composer's original tune developed not into a grand concerto, but a fine miniature.
