Program Notes

Scott Watson's original composition features a moderate rock feel and gritty, dissonant harmonies that combine to portray the sound of industry -- work gangs laboring with machinery whirring, clanging, grinding, and banging, along with several vocal shouts from the band and a factory whistle.

Rock Solid was commissioned by the Northampton Area Konkrete Kids Education Foundation, Northampton, Pennsylvania, for the Northampton Area Middle School and High School Bands, Connor Barz and James Sansone, director, in tribute to the men and women whose labors in the Northampton cement industry built a town while establishing Northampton, Pennsylvania, as the "cement capital of the world."

Performance Notes

With homogeneous instrument use, there will be crossed voices, so be sure that students adjust dynamics so the melody is always heard. In an effort to support completely flexible instrumentation, the following editorial accommodations are included to address potential Challenges.

Where appropriate, some parts may have multiple notes. However, they will not be marked div. When this occurs, assign the most appropriate notes for your students.
