Richard E Maltby Sr
Biography
Richard E. Maltby (b. 26 June 1914, Evanston, Ill. – 19 August 1991, Santa Monica, Calif.) was an American composer, arranger and conductor.
A graduate of Evanston Township High School and Northwestern University, he studied composition privately with Leo Sowerby. He was a trumpet player and arranger with the bands of Benny Goodman, Artie Shaw, and Tommy Dorsey. In 1945, Maltby joined the American Broadcasting Company's music staff under Paul Whiteman.
Maltby had his own dance band and wrote music for radio and television commercials. He also wrote music for orchestra, studio productions, and band. His best known band work is Hail to the Fleet March, which was commissioned by the U.S. Navy Band on the occasion of the band's 40th anniversary.
