Program Notes

The work begins in 5/4 meter with the juxtaposition of woodwind chords with the solo trumpet playing a descending line of whole note, quarter note, whole note. The first expansion of the melodic material appears in the third measure of rehearsal 1. At rehearsal 2 an aleatoric passage suddenly appears fortissimo for a minute duration, which contains patterns of sixteenth notes in most of the winds with glissandos in the trombones and rolls in the percussion; this passage over the course of a minute diminuendos into the glissandos of the trombones which close the movement. The second movement is in 2/4 meter with alternating patterns of eight notes between the solo trumpet and woodwinds. Slowly these patterns evolve with the addition of sixteenth notes. Near the end of the work the rhythms in the solo voice include dotted eighth sixteenth figures as well as pairs of descending thirty-second notes.
