Program Notes

2020 is a year that many will remember: when COVID-19 impacted the whole world and changed our daily lives and interactions with one another. In order to survive this difficult time, we need to adapt and find new ways of carrying on. That’s why I wrote Resilience.

For me, resilience means finding your inner strength to overcome difficult situations. COVID-19 isn’t going away any time soon, so I needed resilience to cope with the changes caused by this virus. I imagine you also have experienced changes and challenges, and I hope you find resilience to recover from daily difficulties.

The music is resilient in a couple ways. The piece is comprised of one theme that is transposed and varied, not giving way to a conflicting second theme. Additionally, the piece starts and ends in the same key, meaning that no matter where the theme journeys, it recovers and returns home.

Performance Notes

Parts sometimes split into two lines and it is up to the director or performer which line to play. Either line is acceptable. If performing with strings, use the Flute/Oboe parts for violin and the Trombone/Tuba parts for cello and bass. There is an alto clef part for Part 3/3a. The shaker part is performable by a traditional shaker, cabasa, or a “found” shaker – for example, a bag of rice or beans.
