-Program Note from score
This solemn work is marked “Adagio,” and is slow and legato cantabile throughout. The primary melody is first played by the clarinets, tenor saxophones, horns, and trombones. Repeated twice again, the key center changes with each repetition. A secondary melody, first scored in the flutes, separates each presentation of the primary theme, The varied scoring highlights the woodwind choir.
