Program Notes

This brief medley of four works by Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) begins with the somber opening and theme from Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, marked "Solemnly." This section leads directly to an excerpt from the third movement of A Sea Symphony (Symphony No. 1). Next, a slow, lyrical presentation of the well-known English folk song Linden Lea precedes the energized finally material, which uses a theme from Overture to "The Wasps" (from the Aristophanes Suite.).
