Program Notes

Written for concert band with narrator, this work tells the story behind the Mexican folk legend that explains why the coyote howls at the moon at night. The supporting music provides a colorful and appealing background that enhances the story and helps to bring the delightful tale to life.

- Program Note from publisher

The story of Rabbit and Coyote has its origins in the Zapotec (Mexican) culture and the story explains why Coyote spends his nights howling at the sky, searching for Rabbit, who has taken refuge in the moon. The narrative tells how Rabbit repeatedly deceived Coyote and manages to escape by climbing a ladder to the moon. Each vignette showcases a different instrument or family of instruments. The composition is designed for directors to use as a teaching tool on children's concerts. Itwas conceived as a "young person's guide to the band." The narrative is provided in both Spanish and with an English adaptation by the composer's wife, Dr. Cay Smith Osmon.

The Rabbit and the Coyote was commissioned by the Langham Creek High School Band for performance at the 2005 Midwest Clinic in Chicago, and is dedicated to the Langham Creek band and director Scott McAdow.
