Program Notes

Quintology, The Science of Five is a short concert piece for winds and percussion. This piece explores the many possibilities of 5/4 time. The form of the piece is introduction, A,B,A. The A sections are built around the subdivisions of 3+3+2+2. The B section utilizes multiple layers of fives, superimposing ten quarter notes over five half notes over twenty eighth notes (3+3+2+2). The piece drives to the conclusion, which includes a short allusion to one of the great odd-meter jazz composers, Don Ellis.
