Program Notes

Mayor John W. Smith of Detroit publicly requested this march at a Sousa Band concert in that city in 1925. Sousa responded by composing this, one of his most vigorous marches, and dedicating it to Mayor Smith and the people of Detroit. It was later declared the official march of Detroit at a brief concert in the Detroit council chambers given by the Cass Technical High School Band, directed by former Sousa Band clarinetist, Roy Miller. (Hail, Detroit, written by Detroit Concert Band conductor Leonard B. Smith, has since replaced The Pride of the Wolverines as Detroit's official march.)
