Program Notes

Although he arranged and transcribed several works for concert band, Roland Moehlmann (1907 1972) is perhaps best known for the series of Johann Sebastian Bach's (1685-1750) prelude and fugues he transcribed starting in the 1930s. The Prelude and Fugue in D minor is taken from the organ collection Eight Little Preludes and Fugues. The dark and sonorous prelude is almost chorale-like, with the polyphony provided by eighth-note scales and arpeggios interspersed throughout. The four-voice fugue passes the subject through every section of the band, traveling through several minor and major keys. The fugue concludes with borrowed material from the prelude.
