Program Notes

This inviting new suite in three contrasting movements attempts to portray the courageous deeds of Nathan Hale (1755-1776) as a soldier and spy for the fledgling Continental army during the American Revolutionary War. The energized opening movement, entitled Rebellion, leads to a slower, more cantabile second movement entitled Hale Homestead, which uses the popular American revolutionary folk song Johnny's Gone for a Soldier. The rousing and concluding movement includes a reference to Yankee Doodle near the end. This, in the words of the composer, "signifies the colonists' victory for liberty from British rule."
