Program Notes

A plaza de toros is an arena where bullfights occur. As the bullfighters enter the stadium, they are usually accompanied by Spanish marches called “paso dobles,” literally meaning “double step.”

This energetic composition is very appropriate for beginning bands, allowing the director to teach basic rhythms, articulation and varied note lengths while also introducing beginner ensemble vocabulary. Students will learn how to hear a simple melody, harmony and accompaniment as well as develop fundamental listening skills within their sections. Plaza de Toros brings the vibrant sound of the bullfight arena to the beginning band while also creating an enjoyable performance for the audience. Cheers will be heard as the bullfighters enter the stadium, and the imagery created through the performance will evoke all the color and pageantry that accompany this grand spectacle.
