Program Notes

This entire work is based on the juxtaposition of two musical ideas: a sixteenth-eighth-sixteenth rhythm and the whole tone scale. The musical material is taken through several musical forms including rhythmic augmentation and diminution, canon, and polytonality. This work retains a driving aspect throughout.

Panhandle Prelude is dedicated to Kelly Deklinski and all of my numerous Florida friends. Kelly was one of the finest trumpet players ever to graduate from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and it has been my pleasure to write this work for the All-County Band in which she participates.

- Program Note by composer

The panhandle referred to is the panhandle of Northwest Florida, not, as might be supposed, the panhandle of Texas.
