Program Notes

Out of the Shadow, Love Shines was commissioned in memory of Blake Brockington by the East Mecklenburg High School Band Department (Charlotte, N.C.). It is a work about a personal journey and those who witness it. There are two primary voices in the work, bassoon and euphonium, which was Blake's instrument. I imagine Blake's journey toward acceptance in the loving arms of his community, and, in this case in particular, his band community. Harmonies unravel slowly throughout the work featuring small sections. For me, each section was part of Blake's community. I imagined him traveling throughout this work embraced with acceptance and love by each section of the band. This is most particularly shown when the euphonium has a solo. I often have notes of the euphonium's sustained in another voice. This represents a hand holding Blake's as he moves out of an intangible shadow.
