Program Notes
One Bright Star for wind band was originally composed as a choral piece by Anthony J. Alvaro, who has been the choir director at West Genesee High School in Syracuse, New York, since 2000. The piece was premiered on West Genesee’s annual “Kaleidoscope” concert in May 2010, and received a subsequent performance at the New York State School Music Association’s (NYSSMA) Winter Conference in December 2010.
The piece draws its text from a poem of the same name by Linda Ori, a published poet with numerous awards and honors to her credit. Ms. Ori’s text for One Bright Star is as shown below. One Bright Star was arranged for the James Madison University Symphonic Band by Shawn W. Davern in 2018, and the piece received its premiere under the direction of the arranger on April 4th, 2018. A student of the composer, Davern dedicates the wind band setting to Alvaro, known affectionately to his students as “Mr. A,” for his unyielding commitment to inspiring and supporting his students and their love of music.

One Bright Star
Linda OriOne bright star in the vast unknown
A blazing ember in the night sky shone
Reminding me that I'm not alone...
One bright star;
One bright star in the evening sky
Holds its own where the angels fly
Anchors the bond between you and I...
One bright star;
One bright star that I wish upon
The first to rise when the sun is gone
Lights my way 'til the early dawn...
One bright star;
One bright star In the midnight blue
Holds the dreams that I dream of you
Take my hand and I'll lead you to
One bright star.
