Program Notes

Russell Alexander wrote Olympia Hippodrome while with the Barnum and Bailey Circus on their tour of Great Britain. It takes its name from the arena where the circus appeared in London. He dedicated it to Carl Clair, leader of the Barnum and Bailey Circus Band.

- Program Note from Compact Disc: The Virginia Grand Military Band (Loras John Schissel, conductor)

Alexander must have thought of the parade of the elephants, as the style is more majestic than most of his other circus marches. The chromatic buildup to the seventh chord before the final grandioso is very effective.

Although this particular title refers to the circus arena in London, where the Barnum & Bailey Show played, the name derives from the arena built for chariot races and athletic contests in Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. The largest of these arenas was the Roman Circus Maximus, constructed about 329 B.C. Built to seat 150,000 people, it was expanded and by the time of Emperor Constantine reportedly held 385,000 spectators.
