Biography

Oliver Dubon (b. 1997, Virginia) is an American composer, conductor, and tubist.

Dubon began playing the tuba in his middle school band at the age of 14, and since then has played tuba in many bands and orchestras. He has performed as a concert soloist with the Youth Orchestras of Central Virginia’s Youth Symphony as well as the Pomona College Orchestra, winning the concerto competitions hosted by both institutions. His main teachers on tuba were Stephen Klein, Tom McGrady, and Stephanie F. Ycaza

Dubon holds a degree in music with a concentration in composition from Pomona College, where he studied under Tom Flaherty.

His compositions take inspiration from such sources as modernist literature, philosophy, and the rural countryside and have been performed at the Atlantic and highSCORE Music Festivals and by such ensembles as the Eclipse Quartet, Quartetto Indaco, Charlottesville Municipal Band, and the Pomona College Band.

Dubon began orchestral conducting at the age of 18 with the University of Virginia’s Cavalier Symphony Orchestra. With a strong affection for new music, Dubon has also conducted the premiere of Matthew Brown’s two-hour long musical, The Beginner’s Guide to Falling in Love. In the fall of 2019, Dubon conducted the premiere of his chamber orchestra work work, to its beginning to its end, and conducted a performance of John Corigliano’s Elegy as the assistant conductor of the Pomona College Orchestra.

He was selected as a 2020 Fulbright Research Award recipient, and will be moving to Tallinn, Estonia, to study music composition at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theater under Toivo Tulev.
