Program Notes
Old Time Spirit is a delightfully upbeat composition freely based on the hymn, Old Time Religion, which is also the melody of the fight song for Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. The composition features soloistic writing, soaring horn lines, and exuberant tutti sections contrasting with a lyrical, reflective, slower section. The composition closes with a restatement of the lively and spirited opening material.
The work was commissioned by students, colleagues, and friends of Professor Wendell O. Evanson, director of bands at Henderson State University from 1958 to 1987.
