Program Notes

Tomas Luis de Victoria was considered the greatest Spanish composer of the Renaissance, and wrote some of the finest church music of the time. He composed many motets, over twenty masses (including his well-known Missa Papae Marcelli), and eighteen magnificats. His hymns and Marian antiphons are equally outstanding. His motet 0 Most Holy Mystery (0 Magnum Mysterium) is arranged by James Curnow in a lovely chorale-style setting that allows myriad opportunities for expressive playing. The text is based on the following thoughts: 0 most holy mystery and wondrous miracle of God’s mercy, That on this holy night to us the Child Divine was born, And laid in a manger.
