Program Notes

This march was originally called The Queen of the Plateau before being given its present title. It was dedicated to Governor R.C. Dillon and the people of the state and was reportedly written at the governor's request. Sousa adapted several Spanish, Indian, and American songs of New Mexico. One of them was the state song, O Fair New Mexico, by Elizabeth Garrett. Others were Las Desgracia, Peña, and Recuerdos de Amistad.
