Program Notes

This march was composed by Lt. Charles A. Zimmermann (1861-1916), then-commander of the United States Navy Academy Band, to honor the graduating class of 1902. Lt. Zimmerman is also remembered as the composer of Anchors Aweigh, the official march of the U.S. Navy. This parade march, marked “Quick,” follows traditional march form and modulates from A major to D major at the trio. Avoiding the range and technical demands found in more difficult marches, this attractive new edition is well suited for accomplished middle school and developing high school musicians.

-Program Note from The Instrumentalist, April 2014, p. 39-40.

As commander of the United States Naval Academy Band, Lt. Charles Zimmermann would compose and dedicate a march for each class. One of those marches, Anchors Aweigh,is now the official Navy march. This tuneful six-eight offering was his gift to the class of 1902.
