Program Notes

Embark on a thrill ride that progresses through different stages of motion. The first section, Perpetual Motion, that continually drives forward with several overlapping rhythms as the melodic material develops throughout the work. The second section, Locomation, refers to the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway in picturesque Blue Ridge, Georgia. Native American rhythms underlie a train whistle in the flutes that pays homage to their lasting influence. The music portrays a peaceful journey on this 26-mile round-trip route that follows the Toccoa River, showcasing beautiful scenery and awe-inspiring views.

The final section, Commotion, is fugally based, borrowing melodic material in a minor version from the opening of the work. The commotion builds, subsides, and builds again until the fierce yet exciting conclusion.

The Fannin County Band Boosters, in Blue Ridge, Georgia, commissioned this work in commemoration to their directors, Elden and Wanda Moates. The Moates began teaching in the school system just after being married and have remained there for 30 years. This gift of music honors their leadership, musical excellence, and dedication to the Fannin County High School Band.
