Program Notes
Written for a summer band camp, this composition was created with minimal rehearsal in mind. Expertly scored using a modal framework that combines melodic intensity and rhythmic energy, the piece begins with a driving opening section with trumpets, alto saxophones, and high woodwinds stating the main theme. A soft, thinly scored section follows featuring the theme being performed by the same sections in a staggered entrance effect. Additional instruments are added, leading to a bold two-measure full ensemble statement that is immediately followed by a suddenly slower contrasting section with a lyrical melody for flute and trumpet. Earlier material is then restated as the piece moves to an exciting conclusion.
