Program Notes
This march was written for a 1938 film, Zangezur, sometimes called War of Zangezur, about a war in Armenia. The march is played in snippets at various points in the movie, and not in its entirety until the end of the film. Khachaturian wrote the entire "soundtrack" for the film, but it is nothing like what we think of as a "soundtrack" today. There is very little music throughout the film, and this is the only section that could actually be called a "piece".
Apparently the complete set of this music is for sale in less than 30 countries in the world; none of which are in the Western Hemisphere. After sending out many, many inquiries worldwide, I finally contacted a musician in Armenia, who went to the Khachaturian Museum in Yerevan, photocopied the score, and sent it to me.
- Program Note adapted from Karen Mesikapp
Zangezur is a 1938 Soviet Armenian war film by Hamo Beknazarian. The propaganda film is about the Dashnak opposition to the incursion of the Red Army and the local Bolshevik partisans in the Armenian province of Zangezur (present-day Syunik) at the time of Sovietization.
