A sparkling introduction heralds the opening of this bright and colorful work. The main theme follows quietly, building in intensity, then giving way to a poignantly reflective melody. A brief transition climaxes in a return to a festival atmosphere.

Manatee Lyric Overture was commissioned by the Manatee County School Board, Gene Witt, superintendent. It is dedicated to the 1985 Manatee All-County Honors Band, Bradenton, Florida.
