Program Notes

LUX was commissioned by the Lawrence University Symphony Orchestra for the first season of their Fanfare Project. LUX is inspired by the composers' study at Lawrence where light is an important theme. The University's seal has two mottos, Veritas est lux (Truth is light) and "Light! More Light!"

In LUX, light is represented by consonance, especially in the form of the E-flat major triad, which tries to break through the darkness of dense dissonances. LUX celebrates the light of knowledge and truth.
