Program Notes

Lullaby was commissioned by the Northeast Iowa Bandmasters Association as one of its 50th anniversary commissions and premiered at its honor band festival on December 7, 2013.

Written for middle school and young high school groups, the piece features limited ranges, simple rhythms, and ample percussion. A brief introduction sets up the main theme, a gentle waltz that begins in clarinets and alto saxophones and expands to include flutes, oboes, trumpets, and bells. The second theme is both more animated and motivic, preceding a perfect-fourth modulation, return of the main theme, climax, and coda.
