Program Notes

Ursula Le Guin’s poem How It Seems to Me ends with the contemplative line, “to vastness and dissolve in light, the long light after time.” While certainly not the context Le Guin was referring to, I instantly began to draw parallels between these words and the rich history of the Michigan State University Bands and began to write.

And then came 2020. In an instant, life for so many of us changed. The work lay dormant for six months, and when I tried to return to it, the direction it needed to travel to reach its conclusion had changed. How could it not have? Rather than force what was no longer there, I scrapped much of the music and slowly began anew. The writing came very slowly, and what began to finally emerge surprised me. The music was upbeat, mixed with elements of pop and minimalism. For the first time in many months, I was reminded of my love of music.

While the title most certainly had significance before the pandemic, I believe it is even more meaningful now. As I write these words in 2021, I challenge each of us to find joy and happiness in a world that, in many ways, feels brand new.

The Long Light After Time was written in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Michigan State University Bands.
