Program Notes

Liquid
Liq-uid | li-kwid

  • Noun: a fluid (such as water) that has no independent shape, but has a definite volume and does not expand indefinitely.
  • Adjective: flowing freely like water, smooth and unconstrained in movement, being musical and free of harshness in sound.

Liquid was commissioned by the North Carolina South Central District Bandmasters Association for the 2019 High School Honors Band, and is meant to portray the many different ways that liquids move around us. In the beginning we hear raindrops, which leads us to the first few notes of the main theme that the entire piece is based upon. This theme is then taken through several different variations, which each depict a different form of water: cascading waterfalls, flowing rivers, crashing waves, trickling creeks, and ripples over the surface of a calm lake. The piece culminates with a harmonic modulation and a thunderous setting of the Dies Irae, or Day of Wrath, a famous 13th-century Latin hymn that has been used to portray fear in music from Shostakovich to Sondheim.
