Program Notes

Adjacent the chapel at Camp San Luis Obispo [California] is a single oak. This was planted in memoriam to Staff Sergeant David Perry the first member of the California National Guard killed by hostile actions in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was called from his civilian life as part of the Global War on Terror and assigned to Baquabah, Iraq. Eight months into his deployment SSG Perry was fatally injured when a suspicious package he was investigating exploded.

This composition follows the events of that day in 2003 to the planting of the oak as a remembrance to his dedication to service and his sacrifices.
