Program Notes

A tribute to the renowned, Seattle-based glass artist, Dale Chihuly, Like a Sea of Glass Mingled with Fire was commissioned by the Tacoma (Wash.) Concert Band under director Robert Musser.

The outer movement titles refer to Chihuly’s process and studio (known as “The Boathouse”), while the middle movement explores three designs that Chihuly has created. “Putti” is Italian for “angels,” and refers to the cherub figures that adorn some of the artist’s brilliant works.
