Program Notes

Showcasing the luminary composers of American jazz, Stephen Bulla has created this rich and varied symphonic setting for mature bands. The medley opens with the cool and sophisticated Miles Davis standard Boplicity (from the landmark Birth of the Cool album), and follows this with the emotive ballad 'Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk. Duke Ellington's upbeat classic In a Mellow Tone brings everything to a rousing finish.

-Program note by publisher

This is a suite in one movement that features the compositions of three iconic jazz musicians. A brief fanfare introduces the first composition, Boplicity by Miles Davis. The slower (quarter-note = 63) middle ballad features Round Midnight by Thelonious Monk. It highlights the flute and also has solo opportunities for oboe, alto saxophone, bassoon and horn (cued to alto saxophone). A transitional accelerando passage prepares the Duke Ellington classic In a Mellow Tone. This is a challenging new work that is best suited to mature ensembles that understand the jazz idiom. It will work well in the lighter part of a program.
