Program Notes

The Titanic, which departed for New York as the world's largest luxury cruise ship in April 1912, sank to the bottom of the sea without finishing its maiden voyage.

Murdoch is the first officer on board the Titanic and one of the crew who bravely rescued passengers until the last moment the ship sank.

During his voyage, it was his daily routine to write letters to his family, which always spelled his thoughts on his family as well as his current status. The "Last Letter" from Murdoch may have talked about the boats crowded with passengers, the beautiful view from the Atlantic Ocean, and the accident that makes us feel an accident. The song depicts the scenery and his thoughts that would have been spelled out in the letter with an Irish melody. I hope you hear the last letter from Murdoch read.
