Program Notes

La Marche sur la Bastille was composed for a revival of Romain Rolland’s pageant Le Quatorze Julliet (The 14th of July), which was presented at the Theater du Chatelet in connection with the Paris Exposition of 1937. Arthur Honegger was one of several prominent French composers commissioned by the French government to provide incidental music. Rolland’s work dramatizes incidents of the French Revolution, and Honegger was asked to write music for the most dramatic portion, The March on the Bastille.

Written directly for wind band, it received its first American performance at Carnegie Hall in New York City on January 3, 1948. It was given by the League of Composers in honor of Edwin Franko Goldman’s 70th birthday, with Walter Hendl conducting the Goldman Band.
