Program Notes

"Quien no ha visto Sevilla no ha visto maravilla" ("He who has not seen Sevilla has not seen beauty") – thus read a quotation on printed copies of this march, which was composed at the request of the directors of the Ibero-Amerian Exposition held in Sevilla in 1929. No doubt the publisher added the inscription without Sousa's knowledge, because Sousa had never visited Seville, the city of his father's birth. According to the dedication on the band manuscript it was "written for and dedicated to the people of Spain."
