Program Notes

Clarence Barber informs us that the title of the work identifies the presence of shadows from the use of minor and modal thematic material throughout the composition rather than presenting a name to programmatic music. The opening is marked “Lento drammatico,” and presents the first challenging focus. There are fast 32nd notes in the tom-toms against an upward sweep of 16th notes in the woodwinds that are written in cross rhythms of five l6ths against seven l6ths.
