Program Notes

Kicking and Screaming (2009) was commissioned by the Grand Valley State University New Music Ensemble, and premiered by them in March 2009. The work is to be performed by piano, percussion (2 players) and at least eight other instrumentalists that provide a fairly balanced ensemble in terms of register and balance.

Kicking and Screaming was composed in 2009 and exemplifies the way human society often approaches change: kicking and screaming.

The instrumentation for this piece is indeterminate – left up to the conductor and musicians – and in this performance will feature an eclectic group including flute, clarinet, two saxophones, bass clarinet, contrabassoon, two euphoniums, and tuba, joined by piano and two percussionists.
