Program Notes

Jubilee (Variations on ‘Saints Bound for Heaven’) was written in memory of John and Carolyn Tarwacki, commissioned by the District Six directors of the Michigan School Band Directors Organization. Both John and Carolyn were lovers of music and proud supporters of the arts, and this work captures their faith and joy of life.

The old shaped-note melody Saints Bound for Heaven is intended as a joyous celebration — as opposed to a sad memoriam — and functions as the main theme for variation. In an unusual departure from traditional variation form, the opening statement presents the first variation before the entire tune is introduced in the low woodwinds and brass. The second variation, a euphonium solo representing a tribute to Carolyn’s love of the euphonium (she was a euphonium player and student of Leonard Falcone), is a Dorian mode melody that is broken down and passed throughout the band, highlighting the varying colors and textures of the band. The final variation is joyful and energetic, replete with flourishes in the woodwinds, fanfares in the brass, and percussion drive.
