Program Notes

This exciting overture was written to recognize and pay tribute to the distinctive and appealing musical style of classic band composer Caesar Giovannini. This original and lively work features an attention-grabbing, rhythmically dynamic opening. A beautifully lyric and contrasting middle section features a short solo for flute before closing as it began with lively and high-spirited material that seemingly flies off the page.

According to the composer’s notes:

Jubilancelation! is dedicated to the amazing composer Caesar Giovannini. When I was in high school, my wonderful school band director Donald P. Hoffman selected Giovannini’s Jubilance as one of our festival pieces. As a young band student and piano player, I was awestruck by the wonderful harmonies and rhythmic overlapping in the piece. It was a defining moment in my life as I studied the score and fell more in love with concert band literature. Because of the goosebumps I felt while playing or listening to Jubilance, I was more motivated than ever to write music for band. Jubilancelation! was written as an homage to honor Giovannini.
