Program Notes
A Joyful Fanfare opens with a majestic and noble statement of the primary theme by the french horns and trumpets. The low brass soon join them along with the timpani before a flourish of woodwinds take up their own variation of the theme. The primary theme is developed into a secondary theme and presented four times with different pairings of instruments that offer a change in timbre and character. Contrapuntal melodic lines and chorale-like parts in the low brass and winds accompany these multiple statements of the theme. The whole band joins in for a final statement of the secondary theme for a powerful climax that returns the primary theme and is then contrasted with the secondary theme. The final restatement of the primary theme augments the second half and adds a short extension for a dramatic finish.
