Program Notes

Joyce’s 71st was one of several famous 19th-century regimental bands in New York. Others were the 13th, led by Harvey Dodworth; the Ninth, (D. L. Downing); the Seventh, (Claudio Grafulla); and the 22nd (Patrick Gilmore). With expert conductors and talented immigrant and native members, these bands were models for many other 19th-century groups. As pointed out by march researcher Bob Hoe on Volume 42 of the Heritage of the March series, “All arrangers do not necessarily follow the exact intentions of the original composer.” In 1937, the arranger Mayhew Lake retained Boyer’s original melodies but changed harmonies, used a different key for the trio, composed a new euphonium countermelody for the final section, and altered some of the rhythms.
