José Rodrigues
Biography
José Miguel Vitória Rodrigues (b. Rossio ao sul do Tejo (Abrantes, Portugal) is a Portuguese composer.
Rodrigues began his music studies at the School of Music of the Sociedade Instrução Musical Rossiense, continuing them ay the Conservatorio Regional de Tomar and at the Centro de Formação Artistica Gualdim (Tomar). He received a degree in music theory from the Escola Superior de Artes Aplicadas de Castelo Branco and a degree in basic education, variant of music education, from the Escola Superior de Educação de Leiria. He also attended postgraduate studies in wind orchestra conducting at the Instituto Jean Piaget, Almada.
As a teacher he has been teaching music at various official and private school institutions on different levels of education, an experience that has given him wide experience in what is to teach the musical art, as well as to establish contact with different realities. He has often been invited to lecture on various themes associated with music as an art.
As a composer, Mr. Rodrigues has created original repertoire for wind orchestra, and is the composer of numerous children's songs. He has participated in several artistic events in the field of wind music, including: Festival Musicam (France); second international contest of Vila Franca de Xira music bands; and guest conductor of the orchestra stage of wind and percussion in Calheta (S. Jorge, Azores) in 2019. As artistic and musical director of the Abrantes Musicians Academy Wind Orchestra, he developed the artistic project "Music of the Time" in the context of the commemoration of the one hundred years of Abrantes elevation to the category of city.
He is the author of the children's song book Six Songs for Children, and co-author of El Gran Libro de la Musical Interpretacíon, with Francisco Navarro Lara.
Mr. Rodrigues is a member of the faculty of the Conservatory of Music of Santerém where he teaches music theory and choir, orchestra and contemporary music group. He is also a founding member of WASBE and of the Portuguese Association of Music Education.
