Program Notes

This interesting piece is intended to convey the experience of a ship’s voyage at sea. Anticipation for the journey builds during a brief opening passage that begins with flutes and quickly includes the full ensemble. A majestic main section, featuring a bold melody stated initially by the trumpets, reflects the ship reaching open seas. The ship glides smoothly across the water during a calmer, more lyrical section, but concern of threatening weather grows as the piece moves to an agitated section with intense rhythmic figures and sudden dynamic changes. An effective key change and a return of the bold trumpet melody, this time with flowing eighth note lines in the high woodwinds, indicates that the ship has survived the storm as the voyage continues, bringing the work to a rousing conclusion. - Program Note from The Instrumentalist
