Jehan Tabourot
Biography
"Thoinot Arbeau" was a pseudonym and an anagram for the writer and church administrator Jehan Tabourot (17 March 1519, Dijon, France – 23 July 1595, Langres, France).
Tabourot held a number of administrative positions for the Catholic Church, which gave him a broad perspective on the social issues of the time. He was especially interested in promoting dance in French society. In 1588, he published a book entitled Orchésographie in which dances, drum pieces, and pipe tunes were notated in tablature. This work, which showed how movements were to be performed and provided information on social ballroom behaviour and on the interaction of musicians and dancers, is the most important source for the history of the dance.
