Program Notes
Jeanie with the Light Brown Hair, the tune for which this composition is based, was originally composed in 1854. From the beginning of their marriage, Stephen and Jane Foster had difficulties. This ballad is believed to be an attempt by Stephen to win his wife back after a temporary separation in 1853.
The song itself falls into a category of poetic ballads by Foster. Other sings in this category include Gentle Annie and Beautiful Dreamer.
