Program Notes
James Reese Europe's 369th Hellfighter Band is a collection of hot ragtime and jazz pieces as performed by the famous 369th Harlem Hellfighters. The 369th was an all-Black national guard infantry regiment formed on the eve of the United States entrance in World War I. Led by Lieutenant James Reese Europe, the band profoundly shaped the direction of American popular music. This medley includes Bugle Call Rag, Clarinet Marmalade, Indianola, Goodnight Angeline, That Moaning Trombone, and Memphis Blues.
